Check-up and Clean

Regular care for your teeth and gums

Whether it has been a while since your last visit or you’re due for your six-monthly visit, a check-up and clean is your starting point. Your dentist checks your teeth and gums, cleans them, and finishes with your next steps for treatment.

Fees, private health benefits and third-party payment arrangements vary. Please confirm current details before relying on an option.

What To Expect

A regular look at your teeth and gums

A check-up and clean is a routine visit. Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and the soft tissues of your mouth, and asks about anything you have noticed. We then remove plaque and tartar, the build-up that brushing at home can miss, and polish your teeth.

Your dentist may suggest X-rays or fluoride if they suit your teeth, and explains why before they go ahead. You also get a plain-English summary of what they found.

Why check-ups and cleaning matter

Early tooth decay often has no symptoms, so a check-up can find a problem before it hurts. Early treatment can stop or even cure tooth decay, and decay which has not made a hole can be treated with fluoride and better care at home.

Decay that has made a hole may need Tooth fillings. Your dentist explains which applies to your teeth and why. Our General Dentistry services sit together, so you can read about the care that may follow a check-up.

Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria that builds up along the gumline. If it stays on your teeth it can harden into calculus, also called tartar, and brushing at home cannot remove calculus. That is why a professional clean matters even when you brush well.

Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease. Early gum disease can be reversed with dental treatment and good cleaning at home, and your dentist explains what Gum disease treatment involves if your gums need more than a routine clean.

How often to visit

A check-up is generally recommended every 6 to 12 months, or as often as your dentist advises. Some people need a different gap between visits, for example if they have gum disease or diabetes. Diabetes raises the chance of gum disease when blood glucose stays poorly managed over time.

Tell your dentist about your health and your medicines so they can suggest a gap that suits you.

Check-ups for children

Children need check-ups too. A first dental visit is recommended when a child's first tooth arrives or when they turn one, followed by regular check-ups. If you are booking for your child, read about Kids dentistry and tell us about any worries beforehand.

Daily cleaning between visits

What you do between visits counts as well. Brush twice a day for 2 minutes with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth every day, and spit out toothpaste without rinsing so the fluoride stays on your teeth for longer.

When to book a check-up and clean

If any of the situations below sound like you, it is worth booking sooner rather than waiting for your next regular visit.

  • It has been a while: If you cannot remember your last visit, a check-up shows you where your teeth and gums are now.
  • Your gums bleed when you brush: Bleeding can have several causes. A check-up helps your dentist work out why and what to do about it.
  • You are due for a regular visit: Your dentist can suggest how often you should come back, based on your own teeth and gums.
  • You have noticed a change: A rough edge, a sore spot or a tooth that feels different is worth mentioning at your visit.

What happens at your visit

Each visit follows the same pattern: your dentist looks, we clean, and you hear what was found. You can ask questions at any point, and your dentist explains anything before it goes ahead.

  • A check of your mouth: Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and jaw and tells you what they see.
  • A clean and polish: We remove plaque and tartar and polish your teeth.
  • X-rays and fluoride if needed: Your dentist suggests them only if they suit your teeth, and explains why.
  • A plan you understand: You hear what to do at home and when to come back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Check-up and Clean

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

The two parts of the visit do different jobs. The check-up is the assessment: your dentist looks for problems and works out what, if anything, needs attention. The clean removes deposits from your teeth. Finishing one does not mean you have agreed to the other, or to any treatment that comes up afterwards, and you can ask your dentist to explain each part as it happens.

Dental check-up guide describes the examination as covering your teeth, gums, lips, tongue and mouth, and it also looks at existing fillings. dental treatment guide describes the cleaning as removing plaque, calculus and debris, followed by polishing. If your dentist raises an older filling or another repair, they explain it separately from the clean. Our general dentistry page lists the wider care that may follow. Before you leave, ask for a short summary of what was found, what to do at home and whether anything needs another appointment.

If you are unsure which part of the visit applies to you, ask when you book. We can tell you what to expect at your appointment, so nothing on the day comes as a surprise.
