Tooth Fillings

Teeth coloured fillings in Woonona, repairing decayed or chipped teeth with care

If a tooth has a hole, a chip or a sore spot when you bite or sip something cold, a filling may be one option. Your dentist looks at the tooth, explains what they find and talks through your choices. To book, call us on (02) 4284 4486 or book online.

Fees, private health benefits and third-party payment arrangements vary. Please confirm current details before relying on an option.

Fillings

Repairing a tooth that has been damaged

A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay, a chip or wear. Your dentist removes the damaged part of the tooth and fills the space so the tooth can do its job again.

Before any treatment, your dentist explains what they found and what your options are. Fees depend on the tooth and the treatment, so call us on (02) 4284 4486 for current fees or read Our fees. You can also see our Patient offers.

Why a filling may be needed

A hole in a tooth usually starts as decay. Bacteria in plaque turn the sugar in food and drink into acid, and over time the acid breaks down the hard outer layer of the tooth, called enamel. A white spot can be an early sign, and early decay can have no symptoms at all.

Children's teeth have softer and thinner enamel and decay more easily than adult teeth, which is worth knowing if you are reading about Kids dentistry. Regular Check-up and clean visits give your dentist the chance to find decay early, when treatment can stop it or even cure it.

Choosing a filling material

Dental professionals can use different materials to fill a tooth, and your dentist tells you which is suitable for yours. Common filling materials include:

  • Composite resin is white or tooth-coloured and bonds to the tooth.
  • Glass-ionomer cement is less strong and is sometimes used for temporary fillings.
  • Gold and porcelain fillings are made in a dental laboratory and need two appointments.
  • Amalgam is a long-established metal mixture that has become less common.

At Woonona Dentists, we use tooth-coloured composite material for our fillings. Ask your dentist what is involved for your tooth.

When a temporary filling is used

Sometimes a temporary filling comes first, for example when treatment needs more than one session, or to protect a tooth between Root canal treatment appointments. It is replaced with a permanent filling later. Your tooth may feel more sensitive for a while after a filling. See your dentist again if it is still sensitive after a few days.

How fillings change over time

Fillings do not last forever. They can chip, wear or change colour over time, and a filling that cracks can let food and bacteria become trapped. That is one reason regular check-ups matter: your dentist can tell you whether an older filling needs replacing.

If you already have amalgam fillings, you should not need them replaced unless your dentist gives you a specific reason.

Other options for damaged teeth

A filling is not the only option for a damaged tooth. If a tooth is badly decayed or cracked, your dentist may talk with you about a crown, and Crowns and bridges explains what that involves. Gum problems beside a tooth are a separate issue, and Gum disease treatment covers what to look out for.

Our General Dentistry page lists the other general treatments we offer.

When to get help

If you have a toothache, see a dentist as soon as possible. This is particularly important if the pain lasts for more than 2 days or does not improve with pain-relief medicines. We are open Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Emergency bookings outside those hours are available by appointment, and our Emergency dentist page explains how to get help.

You can ask for a pause or decline a proposed treatment after discussing the options and risks with your dentist.

When to see us about a tooth

Decay and damage do not always hurt, so the signs below are a prompt to have a tooth looked at rather than a diagnosis. Only a dentist can tell you what is causing them.

  • Sensitivity: A tooth that stings with hot, cold or sweet foods is worth checking.
  • A hole or dark spot: You can see or feel a hole in a tooth, or a spot that has changed colour.
  • A chipped or broken tooth: A chip can leave a rough edge or a sore spot.
  • Food catches in one place: A spot that traps food can be a sign of a problem.

What happens at your visit

Your dentist explains what they see before anything starts, so you can ask questions and decide with the facts in front of you.

  • A look at the tooth: Your dentist checks it and may suggest an X-ray.
  • Your options explained: You hear what is wrong and what the choices are before treatment starts.
  • Each step explained: Your dentist tells you what they are doing, including any numbing.
  • Advice for afterwards: You hear how to look after the tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Tooth Fillings

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

Whether a tooth-coloured filling suits you depends on your tooth, not just on colour. Your dentist looks at where the tooth is, how big the repair is and how your teeth meet, then explains which approach they recommend for it. If appearance matters to you, say so alongside any trouble with eating.

Fillings information lists these factors as guiding the choice of material, which is why a front tooth and a back tooth may be treated differently. dental fillings guide explains that a filling replaces damaged tooth structure. It does not cover a stain or whiten a tooth. You do not have to choose a material before you come. Our general dentistry page introduces the assessment, and the decision comes after your tooth has been examined and the options and likely fees have been explained to you.

If the tooth has been filled before, tell your dentist what you remember about it, such as when it was done and whether it has ever bothered you.
