Invisalign

Clear aligners you can take out

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to move your teeth gradually. You swap to a new aligner as your treatment moves along, and you wear them for as many hours a day as your dentist advises.

Invisalign does not suit every case, so your dentist checks your teeth, gums and bite first and tells you about other options, such as traditional braces. Retainers are usually needed afterwards. For current fees, call us on (02) 4284 4486 or read Our fees. You can also see our Patient offers.

Wearing clear aligners

Clear aligners are thin plastic trays worn over your teeth to straighten them. They are custom made for each person and are clear but not invisible, and you wear them all the time other than when you eat and drink.

Your dentist tells you how long to wear yours each day. Aligners are one of several ways to straighten teeth, alongside traditional metal braces, ceramic braces and lingual braces (braces fitted behind your teeth), and our Orthodontics page gives an overview.

Who may benefit from orthodontic care

Orthodontic care can help with crooked or protruding teeth, a bad bite, gaps or missing teeth. It can also help with problems speaking, breathing or chewing. Children, teenagers and adults can receive orthodontic care. Orthodontic treatment is not suitable if you have unhealthy teeth and gums, so your dentist may suggest a Check-up and clean first and, if you need it, care such as Gum disease treatment.

Treatment time and visits

Orthodontic treatment can take about 1 to 3 years, with regular check-ups along the way. Your own timeline depends on your teeth and bite, and your dentist explains what to expect after an assessment. We do not quote a time here because it varies from person to person.

Retainers after treatment

After treatment, teeth tend to move back towards their original position over time. You may need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in place, either at night only or all the time, and your teeth could move again if you do not wear it as advised.

Ask your dentist about retainers at the start, so you know what to expect after the aligners.

Risks and care during treatment

The risks of braces, aligners and retainers include discomfort when you start, scratches and ulcers inside your mouth, and tooth decay, white spots or discolouration if you do not clean your teeth properly. Because aligners come out for eating and drinking, ask your dentist how to keep both your teeth and your aligners clean.

Read the Guide to braces, aligners and retainers for more.

Comparing braces and aligners

Braces and aligners work differently. Braces are fixed brackets and wires that you cannot take off, adjusted every 6 to 8 weeks, while aligners are removable trays. Which suits you depends on your teeth and bite, and Traditional braces explains the fixed option. Your dentist explains both so you can choose.

What a quote includes

When you compare prices, check what is included: the first assessment, regular consultations and emergency appointments, X-rays and digital scans, a model of your teeth and bite, the appliances and care items, and retainers afterwards. Ask what a quote covers. For current fees, call us on (02) 4284 4486 or read Our fees, and see our Payment options.

Health insurance may cover some of your costs, so ask us about your fund.

You can ask for a pause or decline a proposed treatment after discussing the options and risks with your dentist.

When to ask about Invisalign

Aligners suit some people and not others. These are the situations in which people most often ask, and your dentist checks your teeth and bite before advising.

  • Crowded or spaced teeth: Your teeth overlap, twist or have gaps.
  • A less noticeable option: You would like something that is not fixed metal.
  • Ready to wear aligners as directed: Aligners work only when you wear them as your dentist advises.
  • Healthy teeth and gums: Decay or gum disease may need care before treatment starts.

What happens at your visit

Your first visit is an assessment and a conversation. You hear whether aligners suit your teeth, what else you could consider and what a plan might involve.

  • A check of your teeth and bite: Your dentist looks at your mouth and asks what you would like to change.
  • Your options explained: You hear whether Invisalign suits you and what else you could consider.
  • A plan: Your dentist explains the steps, how long it may take and what it may cost.
  • Retainers: You hear about retainers to keep your teeth in place afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Invisalign

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

Treatment starts with an assessment, then a set of custom trays that you change as your dentist directs. Each tray moves your teeth a small amount, and aligners only work while they are in your mouth. Clear does not mean invisible: Braces and retainers guide notes that other people may still notice them. You take them out to eat and for drinks other than water, as the Aligner information explains, so think about how that fits your lunch break and evenings out.

Aligners have limits. They do not suit every bite, and your dentist may suggest other options, including fixed braces or no treatment at all, if that is the better fit. Ask what the plan would change and what it would leave as it is. If an image or model is shown, ask which parts are a plan rather than a promised result. Our orthodontics page gives a wider overview if you are still deciding on an approach. Ask for a written explanation of the steps so you can read it again at home.
