Oral Health Routines Woonona

Small daily habits can help keep your teeth and gums healthy between visits. Here is what national guidance says, and what to ask your dentist.

Home care does most of the daily work of looking after your teeth and gums, and your visits to Woonona Dentists fill in the rest. This page covers the basics of daily oral care. Your dentist can tell you what suits your own mouth.

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste

Brush for two minutes twice a day with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush or brush head every 3 months, or when it looks worn.

Clean between your teeth once a day

Cleaning between teeth means using floss, dental tape or interdental brushes (small brushes that fit the gaps) to reach the surfaces a toothbrush misses. Do this once a day. If you are not sure which tool fits your mouth, ask your dentist to show you at your next check-up and clean.

Think about what you eat and drink

Drink plain water through the day, limit sugary food and drinks, and avoid frequent snacking between meals. If a cavity does form, your dentist can talk you through your options after an examination, including tooth-coloured fillings.

Keep up regular check-ups

Woonona Dentists recommends a dental assessment about every six months. A regular check-up lets your dentist clean your teeth and look for problems early, such as cavities, loose or broken teeth, worn fillings and signs of gum disease. Ask your dentist how often is right for you; some people need more frequent visits.

What to do next

If you are overdue for a check-up or your gums bleed or feel sore, call Woonona Dentists on (02) 4284 4486 or book online. Ask us to confirm the appointment fee before you book. You can take time to consider any treatment suggested after the check. For opening hours, visit the Woonona clinic homepage. If another clinic in our group is closer, visit Dapto Dentists or Shellharbour Dentists.
