Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers in Woonona, what happens from your first visit to fitting

If you would like to change the shape, size or colour of a tooth, or close a small gap, veneers may be one option to talk about. Your dentist checks your teeth, explains what is involved and tells you about other choices. To book, call us on (02) 4284 4486 or book online.

Fees, private health benefits and third-party payment arrangements vary. Please confirm current details before relying on an option.

Porcelain Veneers

A thin shell over the front of a tooth

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell, made to fit your tooth, that is bonded to its front surface. Your dentist looks at your teeth, gums and bite first, and explains whether veneers suit you or whether something simpler, such as teeth whitening, would do.

Preparing a tooth for a veneer usually changes its surface, so your dentist explains what is involved before you decide. For current fees, call us on (02) 4284 4486 or read Our fees. You can also see our Patient offers.

What veneers can change

Veneers are thin covers of porcelain or resin fixed to the front of one or more teeth. They can help if teeth are discoloured or stained, oddly shaped, chipped or slightly broken, or widely spaced. Veneers may help restore worn teeth, but they do not treat decay, straighten teeth or fix your bite.

For those goals, Invisalign and Traditional braces are the options to read about. Veneers are part of our Cosmetic Dentistry services.

Making and fitting veneers

Porcelain veneers are custom made in a dental laboratory or, in some practices, in a machine that makes them at the surgery. The number of appointments depends on the scanning and production equipment, and if a laboratory makes your veneers you need a second appointment to fix them in place. We send our porcelain veneers to an Australian dental laboratory.

Your dentist takes an impression or a digital scan of your tooth and matches the colour to your surrounding teeth as closely as possible. Ask us how many visits your plan involves.

Changes to your natural tooth

A small amount of your natural tooth may need to be trimmed so the veneer fits, and your dentist might use a local anaesthetic for that step. You cannot take veneers off, and the colour of a veneer cannot be changed once it has been applied.

That is why your dentist talks through shade and shape with you first, and why it helps to have a Check-up and clean so your teeth and gums are healthy before any plan starts.

Possible complications

Possible veneer complications include:

  • A veneer could crack or fall off.
  • Removing some enamel can make the tooth more sensitive.
  • A shrinking gum can expose the edge of a veneer.
  • Other teeth may change colour and no longer match the veneer.

At first your teeth feel different as you get used to their new shape. Veneers may not suit you if you grind or clench your teeth or have gum disease, so your dentist may talk with you about Teeth grinding or Gum disease treatment first.

Caring for veneers

Veneers should last for years if you care for them. Brush and floss as you do for natural teeth and keep up regular dental visits, and your dentist may ask you to return after a couple of weeks to check them. Veneers may need replacing over time because of chips, fractures or changes in colour.

Porcelain veneers can look more realistic and last longer than resin ones but cost more, and resin veneers can be made in one visit. Ask what your dentist would suggest for your teeth, and read the Guide to veneers.

Alternatives to veneers

Alternatives to veneers include living with your teeth as they are, using resin to repair a small section of a tooth, or orthodontic treatment such as braces. If stains on your natural teeth are the main concern, Teeth whitening may be worth discussing first. Your dentist explains the trade-offs.

When to ask about veneers

Veneers change how a tooth looks, so they are worth talking through carefully. These are the situations in which people most often ask about them.

  • A chipped tooth: A front tooth has a chip or worn edge.
  • A small gap: You would like to close a gap between teeth.
  • Stained teeth: Your teeth are stained and whitening has not given the result you wanted.
  • Uneven shape: One or more teeth look shorter, smaller or a different shape to the rest.

What happens at your visit

Your first visit is a conversation and a check, not a commitment. You hear all of your options before anything is planned.

  • A conversation about your goals: Tell your dentist what you would like to change.
  • A check of your teeth and gums: Your dentist makes sure your mouth is healthy enough before planning anything.
  • Your options explained: You hear about veneers and other choices, and what each involves.
  • A plan and fees: You hear how many visits to expect and what it costs before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Porcelain Veneers

These general answers can help you prepare questions for an individual conversation.

A veneer is one possible answer to a question about how a tooth looks. It is not the place to start. Begin by telling the dentist, in your own words, the one thing that bothers you, such as a chipped edge on a front tooth. The dentist can then say whether a veneer, a smaller repair or no change at all fits that concern. Veneers are decided tooth by tooth, so you are not signing up for a matching row.

Write down what you like about your teeth as well as what you dislike. The features you want to keep matter as much as the ones you want to change. Our cosmetic dentistry page compares the wider choices, and the Veneers guide gives a plain overview you can read beforehand.

Bring a photo if it helps, but remember that a photo shows what you like, not what your own tooth can become. Ask the dentist to explain in everyday words what would change in your mouth and what would stay the same. You can take your time with the answer. Nothing has to be decided at the first visit.
